Crit racing, or criteriums, is a high-octane form of cycling that combines athleticism with sharp strategy. Our very own Harry has been diving headfirst into as many crit races at Crystal Palace as he can manage, embracing the chaos and excitement that define these events.

Crits take place on short, closed circuits typically around a mile long, with courses featuring anywhere from two to six turns but avoiding significant climbs. The key to success lies in maintaining a perfect blend of stamina, tactical acumen, and positioning.

Racing in a crit can often feel like navigating a storm. Riders battle not only for speed but also for prime positioning, with intense jostling as they approach corners that only one cyclist can conquer at a time. It’s this energy – the push and pull, the strategic manoeuvres – that fuels both the racers and the cheering crowds lining the course.

The aim of a crit race is simple yet demanding – be the first to cross the finish line without being “lapped” by competitors. It’s a test of endurance, speed, and mental fortitude, demanding that racers like Harry find their rhythm amid the seeming chaos.

Harry’s participation in these races at Crystal Palace not only highlights his determination but also showcased the essence of crit racing itself. Each race brings new challenges and requires him to continually adapt his strategy, fight for his place, and harness the collective energy of the event to drive towards the finish line.
